A Study of Discourse Markers Employed in College English Writing by Non-English Majors

Discourse marker is a common language phenomenon in verbal communication including parts of conjunctions, adverbs, interjections, some phrases and small words. From the perspective grammar, these modifiers do not have many semantic meanings they are less related to sentences. However, from pragmatics discourse, discourse plays role organizing attracting hearer’s attention, expressing emotion attitude speaker. In process utterance generation understanding, works as signal or makes information clear so that hearer can obtain communicative intention speaker easily, thus producing contextual effect. Based on framework Relevance Theory by Sperber Wilson, this essay adopts Fraser’s classification markers, analyzing use markers non-English majors Guangxi region. The result research shows indeed play crucial correct contributes cohesion text improvement student’s writing ability.
